Student Professional, Civil Rights Heritage Center

Student Professionals at the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center
(CRHC) wear many different hats, each contributing to the community focused work we do and
the important history we share.

CRHC Student Professionals are the front-line representatives to guests of the Center during
open public hours. Student Professionals greet people warmly as they enter and offer them
interesting, exciting, and informative tours. During times without guests, they perform a variety
of tasks fulfilling our mission.

Tasks expected to be performed may include, but are not limited to:
Docent: With a wide variety of Center guests, be a compelling storyteller telling the history
of the former Engman Natatorium, its impact on the African American community, and its
role as a focus of local activism.
Curator: Working with pieces of the CRHC’s historic collections such as archiving
photographs and documents, and listening to and transcribing oral histories.
Librarian: Process new books into our specialized library, check out books to guests, and
reshelf returned loans.
Social Media Programmer: Contribute writing and planning content for CRHC Facebook,
Twitter, and/or Instagram accounts.
Event Preparation: Move tables and chairs and set up equipment to prepare for events.

Student Professionals will work a mutually set, regular schedule of eight to twelve hours a week chosen from the CRHC’s public hours:
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am to 2pm, Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 7pm.

While rare absences for emergencies are happily accommodated, our candidate will be
expected to maintain punctual, regular attendance. Additional hours to assist public events are
never required but often available, and always clearly asked as far in advance as possible.
Every effort will be made to accommodate the student’s schedule.
